Umbrella Insurance in Orlando & Central Florida

An extra layer of liability protection that goes beyond your standard policies, safeguarding your assets, your future earnings, and your peace of mind.

Understanding Your Coverage

What Is Umbrella Insurance?

A personal umbrella policy provides an additional layer of liability coverage that kicks in when the limits on your homeowners, auto, or other standard policies are exhausted. It acts as a financial safety net, covering costs that would otherwise come directly out of your pocket -- from medical expenses and legal fees to court-awarded judgments.

Scenarios Where Umbrella Insurance Protects You

Major Auto Accidents

If you cause a serious accident resulting in significant injuries, medical bills can quickly exceed your auto policy limits. Umbrella coverage bridges the gap.

Lawsuits & Legal Defense

Whether you face a defamation claim or a personal injury lawsuit, umbrella insurance covers legal fees and judgments that go beyond your primary policies.

Dog Bites & Animal Liability

Pet-related incidents can result in costly medical bills and legal action. Your umbrella policy steps in when homeowners coverage falls short.

Property Damage Claims

Accidental damage to another person's property -- whether from a fallen tree or a mishap on their land -- can lead to claims that exceed standard limits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Umbrella Insurance FAQs

Straight answers about extra liability coverage in Florida.

How much umbrella insurance do I need in Florida?

A common rule of thumb is to carry umbrella limits at least equal to your net worth plus future earnings. Most Florida homeowners start at $1M; clients with higher incomes, rental properties, teenage drivers, pools, or boats typically need $2M–$5M. We'll review your exposure and carrier requirements (most umbrella carriers require minimum underlying auto/home liability before they'll bind).

What does umbrella insurance actually cover?

Umbrella sits above your existing home, auto, boat, and watercraft liability policies. Once those underlying limits are exhausted, umbrella picks up bodily injury, property damage, personal injury (libel, slander, false arrest), and legal defense costs. It typically does NOT cover intentional acts, business liability, or damage to your own property.

Is $1 million of umbrella enough?

For many clients, yes — but Florida's litigation environment, high medical costs, and frequency of catastrophic auto claims have pushed more families toward $2M+. If you drive often, have young drivers on your policy, own rental property, or host guests regularly, we'd recommend running the numbers at both $1M and $2M — the premium difference is often minimal.

How much does umbrella insurance cost in Florida?

A $1M personal umbrella policy typically runs $250–$500/year for most Florida households. Premiums scale less than proportionally as you add limits — a $2M policy is often only 20–40% more than $1M. Rental properties, teen drivers, boats, and pools can push premiums higher.

Do I need umbrella insurance if I have homeowners and auto liability?

Maybe. If your combined home and auto liability limits exceed your net worth and you don't own risk-generating assets (pool, trampoline, rental property, boat), you may be adequately covered. But a single serious auto accident or slip-and-fall can exceed a $300K liability limit quickly. An umbrella policy is one of the highest-leverage dollars you can spend on insurance.

Does umbrella insurance cover rental properties?

Only if you specifically schedule the rental on the umbrella and maintain the required underlying landlord/dwelling-fire liability. This is a common gap — we regularly meet clients with rental properties who assumed their personal umbrella extended to them automatically. It doesn't.
